Holiday Cheers!

Age group: 8 – 12-year-olds
Time: 10 am – 3 pm (pizza lunch provided!)
Date: Sunday, October 28
Location: Public Space One (Basement of the Jefferson Building, 129 E. Washington Street, Iowa City)(map)

BIG NEWS: Public Space One and the Iowa Youth Writing Project will be representing the state of Iowa by designing and creating the ornaments for Iowa’s Christmas tree in President’s Park as part of the 2012 National Christmas Tree Display in Washington, DC! One ornament will also be displayed on the tree in the White House Visitors’ Center. The design of the ornaments will reflect the holiday season in our state, which leaves a lot of room for creativity. The National Park Service and the National Park Foundation co-sponsor the National Christmas Tree Display, and they encourage us to incorporate America’s national parks, monuments, historic sites, and preserves in our design as well.

8 to 12-year-olds are invited to come work with visual artists from Public Space One and writers from the Iowa Youth Writing Project to create Iowa’s 24 ornaments. Our ornaments will reflect Iowa’s literary heritage by using a “speech bubble” shape, fusing literary and visual art in our design.

Through writing and art exercises, we’ll brainstorm the best ways to represent Iowa in all its diversity. We’ll then design and create the ornaments themselves, celebrating Iowa and Iowans!
